Last year she needed a three-way playoff. This year she didn't bother with the drama.
Miyu Yamashita closed with a 4-under 68 at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club on Sunday and won the Maybank Championship at 22-under 266. Two clear of China's Yan Liu, who also shot 68 and finished at 20 under.
She was the 54-hole leader. Five birdies, one bogey on Sunday. Nobody got close enough to make it interesting.
That makes her the first player to successfully defend the Maybank title. History, in a tournament that hands out something called the Tiger Trophy. Golf is weird.
The paycheck: US$450,000 from a US$3 million purse, per Malaysian outlets the New Straits Times and The Star.
Behind her: Liu at -20, then Pauline Roussin-Bouchard and Thai amateur M. Tojai tied third at -19. An amateur in a share of third at an LPGA event. Somebody check on that kid's travel budget.
Context matters here. This is the 2025 Women's British Open champion and, per the NST, the world No. 4. She's not a nice Asia-swing story. She's one of the best players on the planet doing exactly what the best players do: closing.
The LPGA's fall Asia swing tends to get treated like background noise in the U.S. It shouldn't. Yamashita just went wire-to-wire-ish against a full field and made it look like a Tuesday.
Back-to-back. Two shots. No playoff needed. She's not f*cking around.
