Bubba Watson, the two-time Masters champion who founded, named and captains LIV Golf's RangeGoats GC, is expected to leave the league, according to a podcast from @ProGolfCritic and @GolfloverUK, relayed by NUCLR Golf on X Sunday afternoon. NUCLR noted that "no official announcement has come yet." Neither Watson, RangeGoats GC nor LIV has commented publicly.
It's not the first smoke around this fire. In September, Spanish outlet TenGolf reported Watson had told LIV he didn't plan to commit to what CEO Scott O'Neil calls "LIV Golf 2.0." At the time, Watson told The Telegraph: "I have the option. I can quit or I can keep playing."
Why it's believable: LIV has been in survival mode since Saudi Arabia's PIF said in April it would stop bankrolling the league. New investor BC Partners Credit set an Oct. 25 deadline for players to commit, and per Yahoo Sports only four players (Richard Bland, Ben Campbell, Brendan Steele and Cameron Tringale) had formally signed on by then. Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton and Ian Poulter have already announced exits. The Athletic reported Watson and Dustin Johnson are leading a group of 10+ players pushing the PIF for better severance.
The degenerate angle: Bubba named the team himself: "Range" for the driving ranges he grew up on near Bagdad, Fla., "Goats" for Greatest Of All Time and "Golfers On A Team." In a real goat herd, the dominant female, the herd queen, picks the path and everybody follows. Bubba has been the RangeGoats' herd queen since day one: founder, namer, captain. If this report holds up, the herd queen is wandering off and leaving the herd to figure out LIV 2.0 on its own.
On the course, his 2026 LIV season ended 39th in points with a best finish of 9th (Andalucía), and he missed the Masters cut by one. He's also entered in the DP World India Championship, so he's clearly looking around.
More fuel: On Oct. 14, a federal bankruptcy judge approved LIV's request to reject 19 players' contracts, Bubba's included, leaving them free to leave or negotiate new LIV 2.0 deals (ESPN). Golfweek, citing The Athletic, reports Bubba's severance group isn't expected to sign the current restructuring agreement.
Until something official lands, file this under reportedly. We'll update when Bubba, the team or LIV confirms or denies it.
